Artist to Artist the Martha Graham letter

When you are feeling creatively stuck or (gods forbid) inadequate, read this letter from Martha Graham to Agnes Demille, two of the most legendary creative women, dancer/choreographers in the world.

There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening
That is translated through you into action
And because there is only one of you in all time
This expression is unique. If you block it
It will never exist through any other medium
and be lost.
The world will not hear it.

It is not your business to determine how good it is;
Nor how valuable it is;
Nor how it compares with other expressions.
It is your business to keep it yours,
clearly and directly,
To keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself
for your work.

You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.
Keep the channel open.
No artist is pleased.
There is no satisfaction whatever at any time.
There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction,
A blessed unrest that keeps us marching
And makes us more alive than the others.

--Martha Graham to Agnes Demille

  1. Hi Valerie! I hope you remember me from the NDF in July! I love your blog, and wish you continuing good luck with your wonderful dolls. I took your advice and signed up for the Quinlan show in May, although I am on the waiting list. They said they usually have 10+ cancellations, so there should be no problem to get a table. I really hope you will be there so we can visit again. Doug and I really enjoyed visiting with you and your husband. Keep in touch, and let me know if you'll be at the show! You convinced me to apply, saying I should do well, but I am nervous!! Take care, Terry
